Anyone looking at getting involved in the community may want to checkout the Kinsmen Club of Ponoka.
The group is preparing for its open house set for Nov. 4 at 5 p.m. at its clubhouse at the Ponoka Culture and Recreation Complex (northwest side oft he building).
Club president Justin Graham said the club, which recently won the Ponoka and District Chamber of Commerce Not for Profit of the Year award, has strong ties to the community.
“In the last few years we’ve been really focused on the Kinsmen RecreationPark and the Tom Hamilton Memorial Hill,” said Justin.
The park and the sled hill are located in the Southwest Industrial Park, which has started seeing use from residents. Moving into the future the club intends to develop the recreation park to include a parking lot and a few other potential recreation opportunities.
The open house is a way for residents looking at getting involved in the community and to see what else has been going on behind the scenes with theKinsmen.
While it may seem a formal group, Graham says that is quite the opposite. He suggests the benefits from being a member are in being able to bring services to town but in an informal way.
“There’s a lot of opportunities to do some personal development,” saidGraham. “One of the things about the Kinsmen is the fellowship.”
For now, the group has an ambitious plan to enhance the recreation park over the next five years or so. Where the plans go is not completely clear but the property is large enough that the Kinsmen members excited at its potential.
The club’s goal is to host a meeting once a month plus a social event such as attending a Red Deer Rebels game or to go bowling once a month.
